The cheapest time to fly is usually January-February and late May-June, outside Japan's holiday peaks.
Fares peak during cherry blossom season (late March-early April), Golden Week (late April-early May), the summer holidays and November's autumn foliage, so late May is a good-value pick for mild weather.
Book 3-6 months ahead for the best fares, and earlier for cherry blossom season, Golden Week or autumn foliage. Prices generally rise closer to departure.

Osaka is Japan's third-largest city, on the island of Honshu in the Kansai region. Known for its street food, nightlife, castle and friendly locals, it is also a handy base for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe, all within about an hour by train.
Fly into Kansai International Airport (KIX), Osaka's main international airport. Itami (ITM) only handles domestic flights, so it is useful only for connections within Japan. Many travelers from the US also fly into Tokyo (HND or NRT) and take the Shinkansen to Osaka, which can be worth comparing on price.
